Pimpri Chinchwad, 21st August 2026: Daily power outages in Pimpri Chinchwad are forcing residents, businesses and industrial units to depend on diesel generators, resulting in an estimated consumption of over 92,000 litres of diesel every day, the Pimpri Chinchwad Co-operative Housing Societies Federation has claimed.

In an letter to the Prime Minister’s office, Maharashtra government and the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL), federation chief promoter Kiran Vadgama has sought an urgent audit and upgrade of the power distribution network in the city.

According to the federation’s estimates, more than 7,100 establishments and other entities in the PCMC area operate diesel generators during power cuts, which average around 45 minutes daily. With each consuming about 13 litres of diesel, the combined consumption is estimated at 92,300 litres a day.

At an estimated diesel price of Rs 98.15 per litre, this translates into an expenditure of around Rs 90.59 lakh every day, the letter said.

The federation said the recurring outages were not only imposing an additional financial burden on citizens and businesses but also increasing diesel consumption and air pollution.

It has urged the state government and MSEDCL to conduct an immediate assessment of the city’s power infrastructure and undertake upgrades, including replacement of faulty cables and installation of additional transformers and Ring Main Units (RMUs).

“PCMC is a major industrial and residential hub. It deserves a stable, uninterrupted power supply,” Vadgama said, arguing that consumers should not be forced to bear the cost of inadequate distribution infrastructure through the use of diesel generators.

The federation has also highlighted the environmental impact of running thousands of generators simultaneously, saying the resulting emissions could further worsen air quality and pose health risks.

Vadgama has sought intervention from the state government and MSEDCL to address the recurring outages and strengthen the distribution network in Pimpri-Chinchwad.
