Pune: BJ Medical College Water Tank Collapses During Demolition, Worker Seriously Injured

Pune, 16th September 2026: A worker was seriously injured after a nearly 50-foot-tall water tank collapsed while it was being demolished at the B J Government Medical College’s boys hostel premises behind District Collector’s office early Wednesday morning.
The worker was trapped under the debris and was rescued by the Pune Fire Brigade after an hour-long operation.
The incident took place around 3 am on September 16, when the Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran (MJP) was carrying out demolition work on the water tank, which was reportedly in a highly dangerous condition.
“Following the collapse, the worker became trapped beneath the rubble. Fire brigade personnel immediately established communication with the injured worker and began the rescue operation”, said fire officer Nilesh Mahajan.
The rescuers used equipment including a bolt cutter, spreader, pickaxe, shovel and ropes to carefully clear the debris and reach the trapped worker. After nearly an hour of efforts, the worker was safely pulled out and sent to a hospital for further treatment.
The prompt response by the fire brigade helped rescue the worker from the debris and enabled him to receive medical attention.
Fire brigade officer Nilesh Mahajan and personnel Raju Owhal, Amit Kasbe, Bhausaheb Chormale, Vijay Pinjan, Jayesh Gatade, Alpesh Konde, Navnath Jedge, Maruti Devkule, Vishal Gaikwad, Atish Owhal, Pratap Sangale, Suresh Pawar, Pratik Kumbhar, Viju Waghmare and Mayur Chavan participated in the rescue operation.
