Pune Businessman Stages Kidnapping After Malaysia Trip With Girlfriend Falls Through

Mumbai/Pune, 20th September 2026: A 46-year-old Pune businessman allegedly fabricated an immigration-related problem and remained unreachable after his planned trip to Malaysia with a woman friend was cancelled, prompting his wife to report his suspected kidnapping, police said.
According to the FIR registered at Sahar Police Station (Mumbai Police), the businessman, who operates a laundry business in Pimpri Chinchwad area, had told his family that he was travelling to Kuala Lumpur for work. Two friends dropped him at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on the night of September 14.
Police later said he had actually planned to travel with a woman friend. During immigration clearance, officials reportedly found that she was carrying an old passport that she had previously declared lost. She was consequently stopped from travelling, and the pair cancelled the trip.
The businessman subsequently switched off his mobile phone, allegedly because he feared that his wife would discover he had planned the trip with another woman. Before leaving the airport, he called his wife from a landline and claimed that immigration officials had taken custody of his phone because of an unspecified issue, police said.
According to the FIR, he contacted his wife again through a brief WhatsApp video call on September 15 and told her that the immigration problem would soon be resolved. His phone remained switched off afterwards, and his friends were also unable to contact him.
Concerned about his safety, his wife approached Sahar police on September 16. Based on her complaint, police registered an FIR against an unidentified person under Sections 138 and 140(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, relating to abduction and kidnapping.
Police said the businessman, meanwhile, had travelled with the woman to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus after cancelling the flight. After learning that an FIR had been registered, he appeared at Sahar Police Station on the night of September 16. During questioning, he allegedly admitted that he had fabricated the immigration story to conceal the planned trip from his wife.
Police have said they intend to submit a C Summary closure report before the court. Such a report is generally filed when a complaint arises from a mistake of fact or when the allegations cannot be classified as entirely true or false. The report is expected to be submitted within two weeks, according to a police official.
