AI To Monitor Road Construction, Quality For Pune Grand Tour
Pune, 21st September 2026: Preparations are underway for the Pune Grand Tour cycling competition scheduled in January, with the district administration planning to use artificial intelligence (AI) for road construction and quality monitoring for the first time.
District collector Jitendra Dudi said the Public Works Department (PWD), District Planning Committee (DPC), Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) and other agencies have begun preparations. The administration aims to ensure that roads developed for the event remain durable for at least five years.
Before construction, AI will be used to record road conditions, including width, length, road signs and speed breakers, along with GIS mapping. The technology will also monitor construction and assess the road after completion, including the thickness of the asphalt layer.
AI will also help identify accident-prone stretches with deep ditches, steep slopes and sharp curves along the cycling route, enabling authorities to install appropriate safety measures.
On other projects, Dudi said around 75% consent has been received for the Purandar airport project, with physical work likely to begin in December. Road repairs are underway in Chakan and will continue for around 20 days, though the area may take at least a year to see a complete improvement in road conditions. Work has also begun to improve roads in Hinjewadi.
At Bhimashankar, rehabilitation work and construction of houses for relocated residents are underway. For the Pune Ring Road, the administration aims to complete land acquisition by December and the project in around two-and-a-half years.
