Pune: PMC Steps Up Fire Safety Inspection; Action Against 129 Establishments in Five Days
Pune, 22nd Sept 2026 : The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) fire brigade has intensified inspections of establishments across the city following directions from municipal commissioner Naval Kishor Ram, with 129 establishments inspected and action completed so far in the past five days for alleged violations of fire safety norms.
Of the 129 establishments, 77 were inspected and action taken by fire brigade officials, while station officers acted against 52 others, the civic body said.
The inspections are being carried out at PG hostels, schools, colleges, hospitals, scrap godowns, hotels, coaching classes and other establishments. Those found violating fire safety norms have been ordered to shut and given seven days to comply with the required regulations.
Chief fire officer Ganesh Sonune held an urgent meeting with fire officials on Tuesday and directed them to intensify inspections in their respective jurisdictions. Action is being taken under provisions of the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act, 2006, against establishments found flouting safety norms.
Officials have also been instructed to update details of inspections daily through a Google Sheet and submit reports, along with photographs, by 6pm every day.
Sonune said the fire brigade is also planning to move the process of obtaining various fire-related permissions online. Station officers have been directed to conduct at least 20 inspections a day and record the details through the designated system.
