Pune, October 23, 2020: Maharashtra state government has given directives to Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (Maha Metro) that any metro extension proposal should be sent through Pune Urban Metropolitan Transport Authority (PUMTA) which has been formed to manage and solve the traffic problem in Pune Metropolitan Region (PMR).

Recently the State government’s urban development department conducted a meeting regarding the extension of existing metro routes. In this meeting, principal secretary of urban development department Bhushan Gagrani directed Maha Metro to send extension proposal through PUMTA only.

At present Maha Metro is constructing Swargate to Pimpri stretch of Pune Metro, while the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is developing one route- Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar civil court. There was a demand to extend existing routes across Pune city and Pimpri Chinchwad. Maha Metro has prepared a Detailed Project Report (DPR) of Swargate to Katraj and Nigdi to Pimpri routes. On the other hand, PUMTA has prepared a comprehensive mobility plan for the entire metropolitan region.

State government formed PUMTA in 2019 and constituted a 20-member body to focus on increasing the efficiency of the existing public transport system and developing a comprehensive transport system. Pune divisional commissioner is elected as the chairperson of PUMTA.

The purpose of the formation of PUMTA is to set up an efficient authority to take up the challenges of transport-related issues in the metropolitan region. The authority is supposed to coordinate all traffic schemes and initiatives among concerned organizations while suggesting effective solutions to traffic issues.
