Pune, 24th January 2025: In a remarkable development, the Maharashtra State Government’s free ‘Dial 108’ ambulance service has emerged as a mobile maternity ward for countless women in labor. Over the past decade, this critical service has not only provided emergency assistance to 1.5 lakh pregnant women across Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad, and surrounding districts but has also facilitated the delivery of 3,695 babies en route to hospitals.

Launched in 2014, the ‘Dial 108’ ambulance service was designed to provide urgent medical care, reaching emergency sites within 10 to 15 minutes of receiving a call. In the past ten years, the service has attended to more than 9.5 lakh patients, including those suffering from life-threatening conditions such as strokes, heart attacks, heat strokes, and accident-related injuries.

Out of the total patients assisted, 6.14 lakh were in critical need of emergency medical attention for conditions like chest pain, paralysis, dizziness, and heat-related ailments. The service’s focus on pregnant women has been especially noteworthy, with 75 ambulances stationed across Pune, equipped with medical staff and essential equipment to ensure safe deliveries.

The dedicated efforts of the medical teams have led to countless success stories, with both mothers and their newborns receiving immediate care during emergency deliveries. “The swift response and coordination of the ambulance staff have been pivotal in saving lives and ensuring safe childbirth, even in the most challenging situations,” said a senior official involved in the service.
