A social movement is a must to get Marathi recognised as ‘a classical language’
- At the closing ceremony of the 2nd Marathi Social Media Sammelan, Dr Vishwajeet Kadam appealed Maharashtrian to come together and form a movement for the Marathi language.
Pune, 4 May, 2022: There is no other way than organising a solid social movement to achieve the status of a classical language for the Marathi language, expressed Dr Vishwajeet Kadam, minister of state for the Marathi language. He was speaking at the closing ceremony of the 2nd Marathi Social Media Sammelan has been organised by Digital Media Premi Mandali in association with Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) and Miracle events.
The 3 day Marathi social Media Sameelan’s closing ceremony was held in the campus of SPPU. Kadam was joined by Nitin Karmalkar, VC, SPPU, Rajesh Pande, Member of Management Council, SPPU, Prof. Sanjay Chakane,Member of Management Council, SPPU, Prabhakar Desai, HOD, Marathi Language Department, Sunil Bodhankar, Content Head, Planet Marathi and organisers Pradeep Lokhande, Mangesh Wagh, Sameer Athalye.
While speaking about the importance of Marathi language, Dr Kadam said, “We have sent delegations to the PM and President’s office to highlight the rich and ancient history of Marathi language. We are hoping to get status of a classical language to our Marathi very soon but it will require the efforts of all those who speak and love the language.” The status as a ‘Classical Language’ is given by the central government.
Dr Kadam also lauded the efforts of the organisers and said that this platform for Marathi has given a model for other regional languages to follow.
While concluding the session, Dr Karmalkar highlighted the potential of social media. He said, “it is important for universities like us to recognise the potential of social media and encourage discussions around it. I am glad that we got the opportunity to become a partner and host of this Sammelan.”
The closing ceremony was followed by a musical programme titled ‘Tuka Akasha Evdha’.
