Pune, November 23, 2020: The increasing number of vehicles alone is not responsible for road accidents and deaths in India. According to figures released by the World Health Organisation (WHO), India has the highest number of deaths in road accidents compared to other countries, despite having the lowest number of vehicles per 100 people. Therefore, the challenge for the system is to properly address the causes of road accidents.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)Delhi has prepared a ‘Road Traffic Safety Report in India’ under the ‘Transportation Research and Injury Prevention Program’. An online conference on road safety was organised by the World Bank. The report was presented in the online conference stating the number of road accidents in India in 2018  the figures were released by WHO.

According to the report, there are three crore cars and 17 crore two-wheelers for private use in India. However, researchers estimate that 50 to 55 percent of these vehicles may not be used for travelling for various reasons. Yet, the number of accidents is high and deaths are a serious matter. According to the Road Accident Report, in the year 2018, 1,51,417 people have died in road accidents, while 4,69,000 people have been injured.
Higher accidents in rural areas

According to the 2019 Road Accident Report of the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the total number of deaths in road accidents in the country is 51,379 (34 percent) in urban areas and 1,38,000 (66 percent) in rural areas.

Measures to improve vehicle manufacturing

– Road accidents caused by vehicle conditions, requires different schemes
– To eliminate the differences between vehicle design and manufactured vehicles.
– Timely changing the ‘Type of Approval of Vehicles’
– Vehicle Fitness and Inspection Only at Automatic Centers
– Scraping old vehicle policy should be implemented in the country.
