Pune, 23rd August 2023: The Bariatric Surgery Ward at Sassoon Hospital was recently inaugurated by Hasan Mushrif, Minister of Medical Education and Special Assistance, Government of Maharashtra. With a capacity of 10 beds, this specialized ward is situated on the fourth floor of the new building.

It is noteworthy that Sassoon Hospital stands as the sole government healthcare facility in Maharashtra to house a dedicated Bariatric Surgery Ward. All bariatric surgeries performed at Sassoon Hospital are rendered free of charge. Renowned bariatric surgeon and the hospital’s dean, Dr. Sanjeev Thakur, remains the only surgeon operating in a government hospital in this field.

The Government of Maharashtra had initiated an awareness and treatment campaign on March 4, 2023, within the state. As a testament to this campaign, the Bariatric Surgery Ward was established, offering a solution for obesity-related conditions. Dr. Sanjeev Thakur has appealed to the citizens of Maharashtra to avail themselves of this invaluable facility.

During his visit, the Minister expressed keen interest in the welfare of the patients admitted to the ward. He was heartened by the success stories of patients weighing between 100 to 160 kg, who have undergone successful surgeries in the department. The Minister commended the provision of free medications and the positive sentiment expressed by patients towards the hospital and its medical staff, especially Dr. Sanjeev Thakur and Dr Ameya Thakur.

Furthermore, the Minister lauded the exceptional performance of Sassoon Hospital under the state government’s obesity awareness and treatment campaign. Dr. Sanjeev Thakur, the hospital’s dean, distinguishes himself as the only dean who personally engages in surgical procedures every day despite his administrative responsibilities.
