AI Cameras to Crack Down on Illegal Parking Near Pune Airport

Viman Nagar, 18th June 2025: In a bid to address chronic traffic congestion near Pune Airport, authorities are set to deploy AI-powered CCTV cameras along the New Airport Road and VIP Road (Symbiosis College Road) to monitor and penalise illegally parked vehicles. The initiative is a joint effort by Pune Airport authorities, Pune Traffic Police, and AeroMall management.

Pune Airport Director Santosh Dhoke confirmed that a feasibility study is currently in progress. “We are evaluating the technical and operational aspects of installing these cameras. A preliminary discussion has been held with a vendor, and once the final report is ready, the implementation will move forward. These AI systems, similar to the ones now operational on FC Road, are being considered,” he said.

The new surveillance system will include 3–4 cameras capable of automatically detecting traffic violations. Each camera will be equipped with AI algorithms that can identify illegally parked vehicles, capture their registration details, and trigger automated challans — all without human intervention.

“This technology will significantly reduce manual enforcement and eliminate chances of disputes,” said a senior airport official. “Drivers will be given a one-minute window to move their vehicles. If they fail to comply, an online challan will be issued instantly.”

Y S Rajput, Vice President of AeroMall, echoed the urgency of the initiative. “We’ve received multiple complaints, especially during evening hours, when traffic slows to a crawl due to illegal parking. Both private vehicles and cabs occupy the lanes on either side of the road. We recently viewed a demonstration of the system and hope it will be installed by August-end,” he said.

Commuters have long expressed frustration over the congestion, especially during monsoon months. “Earlier this month, it took me nearly an hour to cover a 300-metre stretch from AeroMall to Wiekfield Chowk because both sides of the road were jammed with parked cabs. Most cab drivers avoid entering AeroMall unless they secure a longer ride,” said an IT professional and frequent flyer from Vimannagar.

Adding to the concerns, another regular air traveller, pointed out, “Even owners of high-end cars avoid paid parking at AeroMall or the private facility on VIP Road. They just leave their vehicles on the roadside, causing chaos for everyone else.”

Authorities hope the AI surveillance project will improve access to Pune Airport, reduce traffic snarls, and enforce parking discipline on two of the most critical approach roads to the terminal.
