Pune, 1st November 2024: Fireworks ignited after Lakshmi Puja have significantly impacted air quality across Pune and its suburbs, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) surging past the 100 mark to reach 115. Experts predict further deterioration in air quality over the weekend.

Typically, air quality improves during the rainy season; however, post-monsoon, the amount of dust in the air increases, and this, combined with emissions from firecrackers, has led to a decline in air quality. According to air quality standards, an AQI of up to 50 is considered safe.

When the AQI falls between 51 and 100, it is deemed satisfactory, but it can still cause discomfort for sensitive groups. An AQI ranging from 101 to 200 is classified as moderate, where children and the elderly may experience difficulty breathing. If the index rises between 201 and 300, the air quality is considered unhealthy for everyone, and levels above 300 are categorized as hazardous, potentially leading to serious health issues.

Following the Lakshmi Pujan on Friday evening, fireworks were set off throughout the city, including the suburbs. Displays included large garlands and loud firecrackers, which released substantial smoke into the atmosphere. The air quality, which had been satisfactory until Friday morning, began to decline sharply by the evening. Specific AQI readings recorded included 175 at Katraj, 158 at Bhumkarnagar, 137 at Savitribai Phule Pune University, and 111 at Shivajinagar.

The SAFAR system has warned that the adverse effects of the fireworks on air quality are expected to persist into Saturday.
