Pune, 22nd April 2023: In a private event in Chinchwad yesterday, Ajit Pawar, the leader of the Nationalist Congress Party and the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, expressed his strong desire to become the Chief Minister of Maharashtra after the upcoming assembly elections in 2024.

Pawar stated that the NCP had a possibility of getting the post of Chief Minister in 2004 when 71 MLAs of the NCP and 69 of the Congress were elected. However, Congress was given the post of Chief Minister, and if the NCP had got the post of chief minister at that time, perhaps the late R. R. Patil would have been the Chief Minister. Pawar further stated that he had worked as Deputy Chief Minister in the cabinet of then Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and Uddhav Thackeray. He worked with Thackeray with pleasure and satisfaction, but he worked with Chavan unwillingly and because his superiors told him.

Pawar criticized the opposition BJP for attempting to topple Uddhav Thackeray’s government from the first day of its coming. He revealed that during Eknath Shinde’s rebellion, officials were instructed to bring the MLAs to Matoshree, but they remained loyal to Shinde and allowed the MLAs to leave Mumbai smoothly. He added that if the three party leaders had kept the MLAs together during the rebellion in the Shiv Sena, Uddhav Thackeray would have remained the Chief Minister today.

Pawar also commented on Vijay Shivtare, the then Purandar MLA, who was criticizing Sharad Pawar and Supriya Sule at a very low level. By deciding and announcing publicly, they were defeated in the 2019 assembly elections. He emphasized that in politics, one should not criticize anyone for no reason and that criticizing should only be done if it is wrong.

When asked about Devendra Fadnavis, Pawar stated that as Leader of Opposition, he speaks against wrongdoings. He added that criticizing only occurs if it is wrong, although the political ideology may be different. He emphasized that they are not enemies of each other and that they were born on the same day, and the year is different.

Pawar also stated that Eknath Shinde will be the Chief Minister by then, and those who say “me-me” without experience are wrong. He added that as long as Shinde learns, he will become Chief Minister.

Pawar stressed the importance of avoiding the division of votes to defeat the ruling party. He cited the Kasba Assembly by-election, where the Mahavikas Aghadi distributed the seats in coordination with the 2024 assembly elections to avoid the division of votes. He added that in the future, the government will be run by alliances, and the chances of any one party coming to power are less.
