Pune, 2nd February 2023: The Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) is planning of opening smaller markets outside Pune to lessen the amount of tempos and trucks on city streets.

The PMRDA and the district administration have received a request for land plots from the APMC. To create sub-markets, it also plans to ask the Pune Municipal Corporation for plots for amenity spaces. Currently, Khadki, Manjari, and Gultekdi Market Yard are being used to load and unload fruits and vegetables. More than 1,000 vehicles drive to these locations each day, adding to the traffic on city highways.

According to an APMC representative, the committee has set aside land in Sashte village for the construction of a market. There has been a request to set aside ground close to the Manjari submarket for the parking of lorries delivering vegetables and foodgrains. Only commuters should be allowed on city streets to alleviate traffic.

Transporters concurred that the usage of city roadways for the transportation of fruits, vegetables, and food grains exacerbates traffic problems. According to them, opening sub-markets could clear traffic on the city roads and highways.
