Nathu La, 5th April 2023: For the second day, today (April 5), the Indian Army, Border Road Organization (BRO), and police conducted rescue and search operations close to the 15th Mile on Jawahar Lal Nehru Marg in Sikkim to see if any additional tourists were trapped in the massive avalanche that claimed the lives of seven people.

When a large avalanche struck East Sikkim’s Nathu La region on Tuesday morning (April 5) and buried their cars in snow, seven tourists were killed while 13 others were hurt.

Around 11.30 a.m., the avalanche struck the busy Jawaharlal Nehru Marg, which runs from the state capital Gangtok to Nathu La at the China frontier, trapping 30 people in five to six vehicles.

The 13 injured people were taken to STNM hospital, where the attending physicians treated four of them while releasing nine of them after receiving first aid.

Prem Singh Tamang, the chief minister of Sikkim, paid a call to STNM on Tuesday night. He spoke with the tourists who had been hurt and gave the hospital’s administrators instructions on how to best care for the patients.
