Pune, 25th April 2023: Less rain is predicted this year. Therefore, the government has already given water-saving instructions to municipal corporations. As many as 97 percent of the toilets in the city have drinking water taps. These include accessible toilets as well as public toilets (urinals).

If the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) takes timely steps and uses borewells or other water instead of drinking water for toilets, a large amount of drinking water will be saved. The city has about 1,160 toilets and the information about the water sources used in them was recently collected by the Solid Waste Management Department.

According to preliminary assessments, it is estimated that 1.5-2 TMC of drinking water is used for these toilets in a year. But, the sewage from the treatment plant is used for the overall cleanliness of toilets. Hence, it is also observed that at least to some extent, water is being saved. A private organization appointed by the Municipal Corporation cleans the toilets using jetting machines. So, the contractor must take treated sewage for sanitation.

In 2015, the city faced water scarcity due to a lack of rainfall. During this period, a water cut was implemented for almost a year. In the same year, the municipality dug borewells in several toilet areas to reduce the consumption of drinking water in the toilets. It was also planned to connect the nearby toilets with these borewells. However, it was seen that borewells were being used in only 28 places. In many areas, the taps of borewell water were closed and drinking water is being used due to broken water channels.

Only 28 of the city’s public toilets use borewell water. These toilets have been constructed by the Municipal Corporation from time to time as per the requirement. However, it was conveniently ignored when they needed to provide drinking water while erecting it.

The water tanks of many toilets are filled only in the morning. However, this water is wasted due to leaking faucets in the toilets.
