Pune, 25th April 2023: Under the Mula-Mutha riverside rejuvenation, conservation, and beautification project, it is informed that no trees will be cut down in the said process and old, rare trees will be conserved. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has claimed that the affected trees will be preserved without cutting them and as many as 65,000 trees will be planted.

On the lines of the Sabarmati River, the Municipal Corporation has taken up a Rs 5,000 crore scheme for revitalization, conservation, and beautification of the Mula-Mutha riverbanks. Among them, works have been started at Bund Garden, for which at least 6,000 trees will be cut.

Reportedly, environmentalists and NGOs in the city have protested against it. Also, eleven environmentalists have returned their Environmental Ambassador Award to the Municipal Corporation. Against this background, an explanation has been given by the Municipal Corporation.

Reports of large-scale cutting of trees are wrong. Under the project, works have been started from Sangamwadi to Bund Garden and Bund Garden to Mundhwa. Incorrect information is being given that more than 6,000 trees adjacent to the river will be cut down during the revitalization work and these trees include old and rare trees.

On the contrary, 3,142 trees of the affected trees along the river banks will be preserved without removal. Hence, more than 65,000 trees will be planted in place of the trees which need to be removed during the river revitalization work. This will help create a green belt on both the banks of the river flowing through the city.

Among the trees affected by the river revitalization project, there is a high proportion of trees like River tamarind, Fabaceae, Vachellia nilotica, and Pithecellobium dulce. It is proposed to remove 1,538 trees out of the total number of trees affected while working on the Sangamwadi to Bund Garden phase.

A survey was carried out regarding the affected trees for the river rejuvenation project. During this survey, the trees were numbered by placing a plaque on them. The Municipal Corporation also said that these boards were put up as part of the survey only to measure the number of trees.
