Assault on Constable in Pune: Four Inmates at Pune Central Jail Attack On-Duty Officer

Yerawada, 8th May 2024: Four inmates in Pune snatched a lathi from an on-duty constable, engaged in an argument, and subsequently beat him with his lathi. As a result, the constable suffered a bone fracture. This incident occurred at the new gate of the CJ department, Yerawada Central Jail, on Sunday (5th May) at around 11 AM.

The victim, identified as Police Constable Nanasaheb Marne, complained to the Yerawada Police Station. Yerawada Police have registered a case against 4 inmates identified as Apoorva Sanjay Khandagale, Suraj Narayan Adagale, Anand alias Sonu Siddheshwar Dhad, and Neeraj Laxman Dhagale.

According to police reports, Complainant Police Constable Marne is posted at the CJ Department of Yerawada Central Jail. The four accused are inmates under judicial custody. Installation work for a new gate system was underway in the CJ Department of the jail, and a wall was demolished for it. Entry to the area was prohibited due to the possibility of significant debris falling. Following orders from seniors, Constable Marne was stationed on duty there. When the four inmates attempted to access the area, Constable Marne stopped them, leading to an argument. The inmates forcibly took his lathi and assaulted him. The assault resulted in serious injuries to the constable, including a fracture to the collarbone.

In response, Yerawada Police have registered a case against the four accused under IPC Sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), and 333 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt to deter public servant from his duty). Assistant Police Inspector Vinayak Ahire from Yerawada Police Station is further investigating this matter.
