Islamabad, 3rd October 2024: Babar Azam has stepped down as captain of the Pakistan cricket team for the second time in less than a year, stating that he wants to reduce his workload and concentrate on his batting. In a detailed post on X, he revealed that he informed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) of his decision to resign from the white-ball captaincy last month to “prioritize my performance, enjoy my batting, and spend quality time with my family.”

In his statement, Babar said, “I have decided to resign as captain of the Pakistan men’s cricket team. It has been an honour to lead this team, but I feel it’s time to step down and focus on my playing role. Captaincy has been a fulfilling experience, but it has also come with significant demands.”

He added, “By stepping down, I hope to gain clarity and redirect my energy toward my game and personal development. I appreciate your unwavering support and belief in me. Your enthusiasm means a great deal to me. I am proud of what we have accomplished together and look forward to contributing to the team as a player. Thank you for your love and support.”

The PCB accepted his resignation and will now select a new captain for Pakistan’s white-ball teams.

In a statement, the PCB acknowledged, “While the PCB supported Babar Azam as the white-ball captain, his decision to resign reflects his wish to focus on making a more significant impact as a player. This choice showcases his professionalism and dedication to Pakistan cricket. He believes that fully committing to his batting will allow him to play a more crucial role in the team’s success in shorter formats.”

The PCB recognized Babar’s contributions as captain, highlighting his ability to prioritize the team’s needs and his commitment to Pakistan cricket. They assured continued support for Babar, emphasizing that he still has much to offer as a world-class batter and a senior member of the team.

Babar’s resignation comes nearly six months after his reappointment as captain of Pakistan’s white-ball teams. He initially stepped down from the captaincy in all formats following Pakistan’s disappointing performance at the ODI World Cup in India late last year. However, he was reinstated as skipper for the T20I and ODI sides just four months later, after Shaheen Afridi was dismissed as the interim T20I captain following only one series.

During his first tenure, Babar enjoyed several successes, including series victories over South Africa and Australia, as well as advancing to the semi-finals and finals of two consecutive T20 World Cups. However, his second term was marked by challenges; Pakistan managed only six wins out of 13 T20Is during this period, including a disappointing T20 World Cup where losses to the USA and India resulted in an early exit. Despite being officially appointed captain for both T20I and ODI formats, he did not lead the team in any 50-over matches during this tenure.

Pakistan’s next white-ball series is scheduled for next month, featuring three T20Is and three ODIs against Australia.
