Pune, 30th April 2023: Amidst the hustle and bustle of modern-day urban life, traffic congestion has become an inevitable evil, affecting millions of commuters worldwide.

As per a recent report by Dutch organization “TomTom,” cities across the globe continue to suffer from traffic snarls, with London topping the list as the most congested city in the world. Following closely in its wake is the Indian city of Bengaluru, followed by Pune at the sixth spot, as per the report.

The survey, which is conducted annually, involves an extensive evaluation of traffic congestion in various cities around the world. The report is then published by the concerned organization, shedding light on the distressing situation faced by city dwellers. The recent report published by “TomTom” reveals the time taken to travel ten kilometers in the respective city, along with the corresponding rank of each city in the survey.

According to the report, London tops the list, with commuters spending an average of thirty-six minutes and twenty seconds per ten kilometers in the city’s traffic. Bengaluru, the fifth city in India, closely follows London, with a travel time of twenty-nine minutes and ten seconds for the same distance. Pune, meanwhile, ranks sixth on the list, with a travel time of twenty-seven minutes and twenty seconds per ten kilometers.

The rampant increase in the number of vehicles in Pune over the years has been a contributing factor to the city’s traffic congestion. Moreover, the lack of a well-functioning public transport system and infrastructural limitations pose additional challenges to the city’s commuters. The accumulation of water during monsoons has also contributed to the problem, causing significant roadblocks and delays. The issue is one that affects common citizens the most, with many of them having to face difficulties in reaching their workplaces and other destinations on time.

A vivid example of this can be seen in the experience shared on Twitter by the chief executive officer of an international company, who had to abandon his private vehicle and resort to using a rickshaw during the rainy season last year. The report by the Dutch organization has highlighted the current situation of Pune’s traffic, drawing attention to the need for immediate action to alleviate the problem.

In light of this situation, Ajit Pawar, the leader of the opposition, has called for the authorities to take decisive action to reduce traffic congestion in Pune. He has urged the rulers to pay heed to the issue and has called for meetings to be held to discuss the construction of flyovers and metro bridges, keeping in mind the future needs of the city. Pawar has also stated his intent to speak to Nitin Gadkari personally, in this regard, to draw attention to the severity of the situation.
