Baramati Crime: Woman Tried to Bury Husband Alive Inside Flat; Police Probe ‘Drishyam’-Like Murder Plot

Pune, 7th August 2026: In a case that has drawn comparisons with the Bollywood crime thriller Drishyam, a 38-year-old woman has been arrested in Baramati for allegedly attempting to kill her husband by administering sedatives, attacking him with a cricket bat and then trying to conceal him inside a partially constructed brick-and-cement structure in the balcony of their apartment, police said.

The alleged murder attempt was foiled after an anonymous caller alerted the police control room through Dial 112. Acting on the information, Baramati City Police rushed to the apartment and rescued Pravin Prakash Jagtap (41), who was allegedly found unconscious inside the structure.

The circumstances have drawn comparisons with Drishyam, the popular crime thriller in which a family attempts to conceal evidence following a death. However, police have not officially described the Baramati case as being inspired by the film, and the comparison is based only on the alleged attempt to conceal the victim inside the house.

The accused has been identified as Sharmila Pravin Jagtap (38), a B.Pharm graduate, while Pravin works as a manager with a Pune-based company. The alleged incident took place at their flat in Indraprastha Society on Jamdar Road in Baramati.

Sharmila and Pravin have been married for around 10 years and have two children — an eight-year-old daughter and a 10-year-old son. Police are investigating whether alleged domestic disputes between the couple in the days preceding the incident played a role in the alleged attack.

Husband allegedly drugged and attacked with cricket bat
According to the complaint filed by Pravin’s father, Prakash Kanhoba Jagtap (71), the incident occurred between the night of July 30 and the morning of August 1.

The complaint alleges that Sharmila first gave her husband medication that left him semi-conscious before assaulting him on the head with a cricket bat.

She allegedly then placed him inside a square brick-and-cement structure being constructed in the balcony adjoining the hall and attempted to cover it with flooring material. The complaint alleges that the act was an attempt to bury Pravin alive.

Anonymous Dial 112 call helped foil alleged murder attempt
Senior Police Inspector Shrishail Chiwadshetti and his team rushed to the apartment after receiving the emergency call.

Police said the accused initially told them that her husband had gone to Pune for work related to passport formalities. However, officers reportedly became suspicious of the explanation and conducted a search of the premises.

During the search, police allegedly found Pravin inside the partially constructed structure. He was immediately pulled out and shifted to a hospital for treatment. Police said he was seriously injured and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.

Pune Rural Superintendent of Police Sandip Singh Gill said the investigation is focused on establishing the sequence of events and the circumstances surrounding the alleged attempt.

According to Gill, the accused had allegedly arranged for labourers to complete and seal the structure. She reportedly told them that her husband had died and that his final wish was to be buried inside the house.

The labourers allegedly became suspicious after noticing movement from inside the structure. According to police, Sharmila subsequently changed her version and claimed that her husband had voluntarily chosen to take samadhi while alive.

Police are investigating the statements and circumstances surrounding the construction of the structure, including whether the labourers knew that Pravin was alive.
Domestic dispute angle under investigation
Police are also probing the motive behind the alleged attack. According to the information provided by police, the couple had reportedly been involved in frequent disputes in the days preceding the incident.

Senior Inspector Chiwadshetti said the timely police response helped save Pravin’s life.

Police officials said the anonymous emergency call was crucial in preventing a potentially fatal outcome and added that even a short delay in reaching the apartment could have resulted in a serious tragedy.

A case has been registered against Sharmila at Baramati City Police Station under Section 109(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on the basis of her father-in-law’s complaint.

The accused was arrested and produced before a court, which remanded her to police custody until August 10.

The investigation is being conducted by Assistant Police Inspector Ingawale.

Police are continuing to examine the alleged attack, the construction of the structure and the circumstances leading up to the incident.
