Barbaric Acts Towards Women: Manipuri Diaspora in Pune Condemns Shocking Assaults and Calls for Justice
Pune, 22nd July 2023: Association of Manipuri Diaspora (AMAND) Pune organized a press conference in Pune yesterday, to condemn the barbaric acts towards women which got surfaced in social media on July 19. The video shows two women from the Kuki community being paraded naked and being sexually assaulted by a mob.
Nirmala Salam, AMAND executive, spoke to the media and deeply condemned the inhuman act by the nano fraction of the community. She added that severe punishments must be given to all the people involved in this crime and they as a Meitei community are strictly against such barbaric acts. However, it would be wrong to defame the entire Meitei community. Such instances of sexual assaults had happened in the past, but it had never happened that a community is defamed as a consequence.
Nirmala also appealed to the media that both sides of the communities are badly affected, and it will not be correct to be biased to one side on the basis of a number of social media posts, images, and videos. She appealed to the media to come to Manipur and do the reality check. Lastly, she appealed to Prime Minister Modi to take immediate and strict actions to bring normalcy to Manipur.
Kulabidhu Chanam, President of the Association of Manipuri Diaspora (AMAND), also condemned the brutal act and expressed serious concerns about the unacceptable uncivilized act of 4th May 2023. The media was requested to spread the message to all the diasporas living in other cities and countries not to spread any rumours nor believe in fake news but to live together with all communities in harmony wherever they live.
Chanam appealed to all concerned parties of both central and state government as well as representatives of all communities to have a common dialogue to bring an end to the present crisis in Manipur so that everyone can start to live happily in Manipur once again.
