Patna, 2nd October 2023: Today, the Bihar Government disclosed its much-anticipated caste-based census, offering a detailed look into the state’s multifaceted demographic composition. Additional Chief Secretary Vivek Kumar Singh spearheaded the release, confirming that Bihar’s population exceeds 13 crore.

The census segregates the population into distinct social categories:

  • Extremely Backward Class: 36.01%
  • Backward Class: 27.12%
  • Scheduled Caste: 19.65%
  • General Category: 15.52%
  • Scheduled Tribe: 1.68%

Religious Breakdown

The religious composition of the state was also outlined:

  • Hindu: 81.99%
  • Muslim: 17.70%
  • Christian: 0.05%
  • Sikh: 0.01%
  • Buddhist: 0.08%

The initiative received unanimous approval from the Bihar Assembly, comprising nine parties. The state government resolved to undertake the census independently, a decision ratified by the Council of Ministers on June 2, 2022.
