Bishnupur Attack Triggers Fresh Violence in Manipur, Death Toll Rises
Manipur, 9 April 2026: The early hours of April 7 in Manipur’s Bishnupur district turned deadly, as a single attack set off a chain of violence that the state is still grappling with.
An attack, reported around 1 am, struck the home of a Border Security Force (BSF) personnel, killing his two young children while they slept and leaving their mother critically injured. The jawan himself was posted outside the state at the time. The incident, widely believed to have taken place along a volatile buffer zone, quickly drew outrage, with many on social media calling it one of the most disturbing civilian hits in recent months.
What followed was just as volatile. News of the deaths triggered protests across the valley, particularly in Bishnupur, where angry residents took to the streets, torching vehicles and eventually storming a security forces camp. The situation escalated rapidly, with security personnel opening fire to disperse the crowd, leaving at least two civilians dead. By April 8, the death toll from the chain of events had climbed to four.
Chief Minister Y. Khemchand Singh condemned the attack, calling it an “assault on humanity”, while also confirming that the case would be handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Officials have so far stopped short of definitively naming perpetrators, though suspicion has largely centred around militant groups operating in the region.

Online, reactions have been a mix of grief and anger, with many pointing out how the incident underscores the continued volatility of the Meitei-Kuki conflict, which has already claimed over 250 lives since 2023.
For now, curfews, internet suspensions, and heavy security presence have restored a tense calm, but only on the surface.
