Pune, October 06, 2020: “The Pune airport runway will be closed from 8 pm to 8 am for maintenance for the next year. Therefore, the schedule of night flights has been changed from October 26. Only day flights will remain operational”, said Pune Airport Director Kuldeep Singh.

The Pune Airport at Lohegaon is operating from defence land which is owned by the Indian Air Force (IAF). The runway is maintained and repaired by IAF.

Now, the Air force will start the repair work of runway from October 26. This work will continue every night from 8 pm to 8 am for the next year. At present, there are 26 night flights to and fro from the airport. However, due to runway work, these flights will now be scheduled between 8 am to 8 pm.

Currently, Pune Airport operates flights to Delhi, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, Nagpur, Kochi, Lucknow and Hyderabad.

Airport Director Singh further said, “There would be no passenger traffic at night as the runway would be repaired. But that won’t cancel any flights. All night flights will be scheduled during the day. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, to maintain a social distance a maximum of 500 passengers can come and go in an hour. So only four flights can take off and land in an hour. Therefore, about 90 flights will be able to come and go from 8 am to 8 pm.”

He added, “At present, there are some restrictions on passenger transport as per the rules of the Airport Authority. So even if the runway is closed at night, it will not have much effect. We will also request the Air Force to complete the work as soon as possible.”

Around 9000 passengers movement every day

In 2018-19, the number of passengers was around 90 lakh per year. Further, it was dropped to 80 lakh last year. However, due to the Corona crisis, flights are limited to 90 flights a day. Earlier this number was around 180. At present, 9000 passenger movement is recorded every day at Pune airport.
