Calls Impersonating Telecom Officials Lead to Increased Cyber Frauds, Warns DoT

Pune, 30 March, 2024: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has issued a warning that fraudulent scam calls are being made to unwary people on a daily basis. These calls, which frequently pose as government representatives, threaten receivers with serious consequences, such as having their services cut off.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) recently released an official statement highlighting the growing threat posed by spoof calls. The statement also stressed the possibility for severe financial losses and identity theft. Calls coming from overseas numbers, especially those beginning with the country code +92, are especially alarming.
Users of WhatsApp are also advised by the Department to be wary of calls from unknown overseas numbers. These scammers frequently pose as representatives of the government in order to take advantage of unsuspecting victims who unintentionally disclose private information.
A DoT official advised, “Do not share personal details or entertain suspicious calls.” “We do not authorise such communication and advise the public to remain vigilant.”
The Department of Telecommunications has asked the public to report fraud using the ‘Chakshu-Report Suspected Fraud Communications’ portal in order to deter this threat. The purpose of this project is to provide individuals with the resources they require to stop fraud and cybercrimes.
The DoT’s warning coincides with a rise in cyber fraud, emphasising the need for people to be more cautious and mindful of their surroundings. As technology advances, criminals discover new ways to take advantage of unsuspecting people, therefore it is crucial that people use vigilance and report any suspicious activity immediately.
