Mumbai/Pune, 18th August 2026: The Maharashtra Cabinet has given in-principle approval for the state to submit a bid to host the 2032 UCI Road World Championships in Pune, along with the required government support, financial guarantees and commitments related to infrastructure.

Deputy Chief Minister and Sports Minister Sunetra Ajit Pawar said the decision would strengthen Maharashtra’s bid to host major international sporting events.

The state government’s decision follows the successful organisation of the Pune Grand Tour 2026, which, according to Pawar, demonstrated Maharashtra’s ability to conduct international-level cycling competitions.

“The successful organisation of Pune Grand Tour 2026 has demonstrated Maharashtra’s capability to host international cycling competitions. The event was conducted under the guidance of Ajitdada Pawar and was also noted by the UCI. We are now taking the initiative to bid for the hosting rights of the UCI Road World Championships,” Pawar said.

Pune could become Asia’s first host city
If Pune is selected to host the 2032 UCI Road World Championships, it could become the first city in Asia to host the event, according to the state government.

The championship could provide Maharashtra with international exposure across more than 100 countries and potentially reach an estimated global television and digital audience of 250 million to 300 million viewers.
The government has also estimated the event could generate economic value exceeding Rs 330 crore.

The Cabinet has approved submitting a letter of support to the UCI and paying a bid fee of approximately Rs 36.5 lakh. It has also authorised the Cycling Federation of India and the Pune Grand Tour Committee to submit the bid.

The state has given in-principle approval to provide the necessary financial guarantees and meet contractual requirements if Pune is awarded the hosting rights.

Visa facilitation and cycling infrastructure planned
Given the expected participation of athletes and officials from across the world, the state plans to coordinate with the Union Ministries of External Affairs and Home Affairs to develop a protocol for facilitating visas for participants.

The government also plans to use the event to promote cycling beyond the championship. A process will be initiated for developing a Western Ghats Cycling Corridor and securing a UCI City Label for Pune, according to Pawar.

Hosting the world championship is also expected to accelerate the development of supporting infrastructure in and around Pune, including roads, traffic management systems, security arrangements, accommodation, medical facilities, broadcasting infrastructure and other sporting facilities.

Pawar said the state’s experience with the Pune Grand Tour had provided a foundation for pursuing an international championship.

“After Pune Grand Tour 2026, we are now moving towards a global championship. This will inspire young athletes in Maharashtra and further strengthen Pune’s position on the international sporting map,” she said.
