Pune, 30 September 2023: In a country known for its grand and elaborate wedding celebrations, a new trend is emerging—one that values simplicity, intimacy, and personal choice over opulence and extravagance. The concept of court marriages, or small intimate weddings, is gaining traction among young Indians, challenging cultural norms and reshaping the way weddings are celebrated.

The discussion began when social media entrepreneur Ranveer Allahbadia initiated a poll on Twitter, asking whether young Indians would be willing to opt for a court marriage instead of a lavish showcase wedding. The responses to this poll revealed a fascinating mix of opinions and experiences.

Vineet Jain, from Tata Administration Services, shared his own story of a minimalist wedding that was not only memorable but also budget-friendly. He and his wife decided to keep their wedding a small affair, with just close family and a registrar. The absence of elaborate rituals and a large guest list allowed them to create an intimate and meaningful celebration.

Krunal Jungade emphasized the significance of intimate celebrations. He highlighted that while large weddings have their charm, there’s something uniquely special about smaller gatherings. Personalizing the wedding experience is gaining importance as couples seek to make their special day truly their own.

Influencers Abhi and Niyu expressed a desire for more say in their wedding decisions. They emphasized the challenge of maintaining individuality when Indian weddings often involve uniting two families. For them, a small, intimate wedding would have been ideal.

Prateek and Tapasya took the concept of simplicity to another level, sharing their wedding experience, which cost less than Rs 10,000. Their decision to wear affordable attire and allocate funds primarily to the temple and the photographer resulted in a meaningful and budget-conscious ceremony.

These diverse perspectives underscore a shifting mindset among young Indians when it comes to weddings. While opulent weddings will always have their place, many are now opting for smaller, more personal celebrations that reflect their values and preferences.

The trend towards court marriages and intimate weddings is not about advocating for a one-size-fits-all approach but rather emphasizing the importance of choice. Couples are increasingly making decisions that resonate with their personalities and priorities. Whether it’s a grand extravaganza or a modest court marriage, what matters most is that the day is a true reflection of the couple’s desires and dreams.

As these stories and opinions continue to circulate on social media, it’s evident that weddings in India are evolving. They are becoming more diverse, personal, and reflective of the changing times. In this era of individualism and self-expression, weddings are not just about rituals but also about celebrating love, choices, and meaningful moments.
