Chief of Defence Staff Anil Chauhan Discusses Future Wars and Warfare at Savitribai Phule Pune University

Pune, 3rd June 2025: A special lecture titled “Future Wars and Warfare” was delivered by General Anil Chauhan, Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), at the Department of Defence and Strategic Studies, Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU).
General Chauhan shared insights on India’s recent military operations and its approach to terrorism. He highlighted that the aim of ‘Operation Sindhu’ was to curb Pakistan’s state-sponsored terrorism, emphasizing that India had no intention of causing further harm to Pakistan. After attacks occurred in areas such as Sargodha and Shujaabād, Pakistan initiated communication, leading to a cessation of hostilities.
Reflecting on the severity of terrorism, General Chauhan stated that India has suffered the highest number of terrorist attacks globally, with nearly 20,000 civilians killed in such incidents to date. He cited the brutal incident in Pahalgam as a grim reminder of the ongoing threat.
He recalled that during the onset of Operation Sindhu on 10th May, Pakistan attempted to escalate tensions by launching attacks on India at dawn. However, India’s response was targeted exclusively at terrorist bases. Contrary to initial expectations of a 48-hour operation, it was successfully concluded in just eight hours, after which Pakistan signaled its readiness to negotiate with India. General Chauhan noted that throughout Operation Sindhu, military and political strategies were pursued in parallel.
Addressing the armed forces, General Chauhan stressed the importance of resilience. He urged soldiers not to be disheartened by setbacks or losses, but to maintain high morale in the face of adversity. He emphasized the necessity of learning from mistakes, correcting them, and moving forward. He concluded by stating that victory cannot be achieved by living under the shadow of fear.
