Pune, 20th November 2021: Today on the occasion of Children’s Rights Day, Child-Friendly Rooms have been set up at Sinhagad Road Police Station, Dattawadi Police Station, Alankar Police Station, Kothrud Police Station, Warje Malwadi Police Station and Uttamnagar Police Station under Zone 3 of Pune city police.
As per the Juvenile Justice Act 2015, all departments working with children must be child friendly. All children in need of protection within the jurisdiction of the police station and in conflict with the law should be rehabilitated in a child-friendly environment. For this purpose, special rooms have been set up on the premises of the police stations.
Officials said that the aim of the initiative was to provide an environment that will enable children to report cases without fear. This will benefit even those children who have committed offences and “ensure that repeat offenders and children from nearby communities are not engaged in criminal activities and, on the contrary, support police in prevention of crime.”
Commissioner of Police Amitabh Gupta inaugurated the room at Sinhagad Road Police Station and symbolically dedicated the child-friendly cell at the other five police stations. The program was enjoyed by 35-40 children.
Also present on the occasion were Caroline Valter, Founder CEO of Hope for The Children Foundation, Jt CP Ravindra Shisve, Additional CP Rajendra Dahale, Pune Police psychology well-being group member Gayatri Kotbagi, actress Parna Pethe, former member of NCPCR Rupa Kapoor and District Child Protection Officer Param Anand, DCP (Zone 3) Pournima Gaikwad, ACP (Sinhgad Road Division) Sunil Pawar and ACP (Kothrud Division) Gajanan Tonpe.
Pune city police had set up first child friendly room at Lashkar police station premises in Camp in December 2020. After learning from the experience, similar rooms are being established at other police stations also.
