Shivajinagar, 20th December 2023: Pune is shivering under the grip of winter, as Pashan witnessed a frigid low of 10.4 degrees Celsius, making it one of the chilliest mornings of the season. The chill extended its reach to Shivajinagar as well, where temperatures dipped to 12 degrees Celsius.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts that this cold spell will persist for the next 24 hours, followed by a slight uptick in minimum temperatures.

“Today, we anticipate an additional 1°C drop in temperature. The northeast wind has been penetrating Pune over the past 24 hours. However, starting from the 22nd December, there is a likelihood of a change in the wind pattern, blocking the northerly component. This change is expected to lead to a gradual increase in minimum temperatures from the evening of the 22nd for a couple of days”, said Anupam Kashyapi, weather forecasting, IMD.

Attributed to the influx of cold winds from the northern and north-eastern regions of India, and a slight cloud cover, this temperature plunge has been notable. While Pune has predominantly enjoyed clear skies with a touch of early morning haze, some areas reported cloudy conditions in the afternoon.

Earlier predictions by the IMD hinted at a 2-3 degree Celsius drop in minimum temperatures over the recent days. Despite the prevailing chill, Pune’s mercury levels have yet to dip below 10 degrees Celsius this season—a departure from the warmer winter forecasted by the IMD.

This unexpected coolness can be traced back to an active El Nino and below-normal rainfall, contributing to an atypical winter across Maharashtra, as highlighted by IMD officials.
