Cigarettes worth Rs 39 lakhs Seized by Pune Police Crime Branch

Pune, April 15, 2020: At a time when people are grappling for grocery and vegetables, some traders are engaged in profiteering by selling cigarettes at higher prices. In one such case, Pune City Police Crime Branch officials have seized cigarettes worth Rs 39 lakhs from a trader in Market Yard.

Crime Branch DCP Bachchan Singh said that due to the Coronavirus outbreak, there is a nationwide lockdown and only essential commodities sale is allowed during this period. Police Sub Inspector Nileshkumar Mahadik of Anti-Extortion Cell/Anti-Narcotics Cell, received a tip-off that a trader is selling cigarettes along with essential commodities.

Accordingly, a team comprising Police Inspector Rajendra Mohite, PSI Sanjay Gaikwad today raided M/s Chamadiya Trading in Market Yard. A total of 37 boxes of cigarettes worth Rs 39 lakhs were seized from the shop. Now a case has been registered with Market Yard police station against the shop owner Shashikant Ramswarup Chamadiya (43), a resident of Koregaon Park. Police have charged him for various offences under the Indian Penal Code, Disaster Management Act and Epidemic Diseases Act.

Additional CP (crime) Ashok Morale, ACP Shivaji Pawar guided the police team which included policemen Eknath Kandhare, Pandurang Wanjale, Hanumant Gaikwad, Vijay Gurav and Sunil Chikhle.
