Pimpri-Chinchwad, 8th June 2023: The Congress party has officially staked its claim on the Pune Lok Sabha constituency. Balasaheb Thorat, a prominent Congress leader, expressed the party’s intention to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha by-election in Pune as part of the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance. Thorat emphasized that Pune has traditionally been a Congress stronghold and that the party will demand the right to contest the seat during the alliance’s meeting. He made these remarks while addressing the media in Pimpri-Chinchwad.

Thorat stated, “The upcoming Lok Sabha elections hold great significance for the future. While assembly and municipal elections are also on the horizon, all parties are focused on the Lok Sabha polls. The discussions within the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance revolve around which party has traditionally contested from Pune. In the past, the Congress has fielded candidates for this seat. As part of the Maha Vikas Aghadi, we will collectively contest the Lok Sabha elections in Pune. We appeal to everyone to extend their cooperation, and we will make this request during the meeting.”

Responding to NCP leader Ajit Pawar’s statement, Thorat said, “Discussions will continue, but it is important to consider the traditional claim on the constituency. We stand firm in our claim, as Pune has historically been a Congress seat. We have entered the fray and will continue to seek the Pune Lok Sabha seat. We will insist on seats where our party’s candidates can emerge victorious.”

Expressing his concerns about the deteriorating level of political discourse, Thorat remarked, “Politics has stooped to a low level. We have refrained from watching television due to the current scenario. Should politicians be allowed to say anything and expect the public to listen? If politicians fail to adhere to a code of conduct in their speeches, I demand that television channels also follow a code of conduct. Controversial statements should not be aired. Isn’t there a limit to what can be said? In my 40 years of political experience, I have never witnessed such a lack of mutual respect. We must preserve a culture of dignity and mutual respect.”
