Mumbai/Pune, 24th May 2025: Maharashtra recorded 47 new COVID-19 infections on Saturday, with Mumbai alone accounting for the majority of the cases, according to the state health department’s latest update.

Out of the total, 30 cases were reported in Mumbai, while Pune logged seven, Thane six, and Navi Mumbai three. A single case was reported from Nagpur, health officials confirmed.

Tragically, four COVID-related fatalities were also recorded. Among them was a 21-year-old diabetic male from Thane who was undergoing treatment at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital. His COVID-19 test returned positive, and he succumbed on Saturday, the department said.

Pune Cases Mild, Mumbai Shows Rising Trend
In Pune, municipal authorities confirmed that all seven patients reported on Saturday exhibited mild symptoms and are currently recovering at home or under observation in local facilities.

“We’re seeing mostly low-grade fever, sore throat, and fatigue. No severe cases have emerged from Pune in the current batch,” a PMC health officer said.
Mumbai, however, has seen a significant surge in recent weeks. Of the 213 cases registered in the city this year, 207 were reported in May alone, suggesting a sharp rise in transmission within the last few weeks.

Active Cases on the Rise, But Officials Say No Need to Panic
The state has intensified COVID-19 surveillance in response to the recent uptick in infections. Since January, 7,143 samples have been tested, out of which 257 individuals were found positive. At present, 166 active cases are under medical observation, while 87 patients have recovered so far.
“We’re closely monitoring the situation and encouraging early testing,” a senior official from the Maharashtra Public Health Department told Punekar News. “Although most cases are mild, people with underlying health conditions need to be extra cautious.”
