Crackdown on Unauthorized Schools in Maharashtra, Orders Education Commissioner

Pune, 13th April 2023: The Education Commissioner, Suraj Mandhare, has ordered the closure of unauthorized schools and bogus schools operating in the state. Over the past few months, several such cases have been reported, and this action has been taken to curb the illegal practice.

In a circular issued to the Deputy Director of Education, Mandhare has instructed the authorities to verify the validity of documents such as permission certificates, permission orders, and recognition certificates issued to schools in the state.

The parents can check the list of valid schools on the website of the Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+).

A committee formed under the chairmanship of the Joint Director, Administration, Estimates, and Planning, Commissioner Education Office has been tasked with overseeing the verification process. The committee has been instructed to submit a final report on the validity of these certificates to the Education Commissioner’s office by April 28, 5 pm. The Education Commissioner has made it clear that no extension of time will be given to take action against these unauthorized schools.

The circular further directs authorities to take action against schools that do not have objection certificates or affiliation certificates, as per the RTE 2009 supplementary government decision. The authorities have been instructed to impose fines, file an FIR with the police, and close the school before April 25. They have also been advised to adjust the students in the nearest school without causing any loss to them.

The Education Commissioner has emphasized that there should be no delay in this matter and urged the authorities to take swift action against unauthorized and bogus schools. This move is expected to improve the quality of education and ensure that students receive the best education possible from authorized schools. The authorities are expected to take the necessary measures to implement these instructions and ensure that students are not affected by the closure of unauthorized schools.
