As the Muharram procession passed Sadhu Vaswani Mission today Saturday October 24, 2015, Rev. Dada J.P. Vaswani & the Mission paid homage to the saint of Islam, Imam Husain (a.s.). The Mission volunteers served the marchers with refreshing drinks and eatables. Dada himself served many of them with biscuits.

Sadhu Vaswani Mission sought to pay obeisance to the grandson of Prophet Muhammad and saint of Islam, Imam Husain (a.s.) and to the lessons of sacrifice, truth, courage and patience, which Imam Husain (a.s.) has left behind as a legacy for mankind. Imam Husain was killed in the battle of Karbala in the year 680 AD. In the Imam’s homage and to fortify in his footsteps, mourning ceremonies & processions with ‘Tazias’ & ‘Maatam’ are carried out. Maatam takes the form of beating one’s chest.

As the procession passed through Sadhu Vaswani Traffic Circle, befittingly Sadhu Vaswani’s statue seemed to echo his words inscribed below it, ‘Children of the Earth, Ye all are One’.

“Keep his memory alive for centuries to come,” said Rev. Dada J.P. Vaswani, Spiritual Head of the Mission, as he carried the Alam for a minute. And they asked him, “Everyone goes to the Alam to receive blessings but Alam has come to bless you. How do you feel about that?” He answered, “I feel like bowing down to everyone of you. You have brought Alam to my house. You have given me a great blessing.”

The love and respect that Sadhu Vaswani felt for this great saint of Islam was reflected in the Mission volunteers as they served the members of the Muharram procession with drinks and eatables. A participant, Mr. Ali Reza Dehqampour said, “We have been doing this practice of halting at the Mission since the time of Sadhu Vaswani.”

Punekar News's photo.Another participant, Mr. Syed Safdar Ali, felt the serenity and the peace as he entered the premises of the Mission. He remarked, “This is my second time at the Mission for this procession. It is a very pure and holy atmosphere. Here, there is no difference in caste or religion. They are respecting the Muslim community.”

A member of the Muharram procession, Mr. Mahmod Jaffery, has been coming to the Mission for several years and said, “We look forward to meeting Dada Vaswani ji. He gives us so much respect, even at this age. We seek his blessings.”

Sadhu Vaswani Mission, under Dada J.P. Vaswani’s aegis, believes in the unity of all religions and seeks to serve all without any restriction of colour, caste or creed.

About Muharram: On Ashoor, the tenth of Muharram, Muslims all over the world mourn the tragic martyrdom of the Prophet’s grandson who was massacred with his family and friends by Yazid, son of Muawiyah, all those years ago in the seventh century BCE. This day, many people of other faiths unite with Hanafi and Maliki, Shia and Sunni, to mourn the death of Hussain.

Imam Husain taught us to be prepared to lay down our lives to protect dharma, not to take innocent lives. He came from a lineage where sacrifice was a way of life. 72 of his family and friend faced the savage hordes of Yazid on the burning sands of Karbala – it seemed the culmination of a long tradition of sacrifice.
