Pune, 18th February 2023: The Defence Ministry has announced the election of 57 cantonment boards across India, including the Pune and Khadki Cantonment Boards. The election will be held on April 30, as per the gazette published on Saturday. The Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) is one of the important municipalities in the state, which has been under the administration since November 2021.

The expiry of the term of municipalities like Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, and Aurangabad has led to administrators being appointed. Similarly, 57 cantonment boards in the country are being currently administered. After the expiration of the board members’ membership in November 2021, a three-member committee has been looking after the board’s affairs, and the deadline has been extended twice so far.

The sudden announcement of the elections has created an atmosphere of confusion among the candidates, as many were expecting the deadline to be extended again.

Sachin Mathurwala, Vice President of the Pune Cantonment Board, expressed disappointment with the announcement of the sudden election, stating that citizens would have been able to avail government facilities if the board had been included in the Municipal Corporation. He further added that the financial situation of the board is desperate as the GST money is stuck with the central government, and even if a new member is elected, there is very little opportunity to work.

The sudden announcement of the election has also raised questions about the government’s intentions regarding the board, and many citizens are calling for clarity and transparency from the authorities. The election is expected to bring changes to the board’s functioning, and citizens hope that their grievances will be addressed soon.
