Demand for BH Series Number Plates Rises in Pune, 7,394 Vehicles Registered in Year 2025-26
Pune, 18th April 2026: Demand for Bharat (BH) series registration number plates is witnessing a sharp rise in Pune, with 7,394 vehicles registered under the scheme in the financial year 2025-26, according to data from the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO).
Officials said the figure marks a significant increase compared to previous years, reflecting growing preference among vehicle owners for the “One Nation, One Number” system.
Of the total registrations in the last financial year, 4,637 were cars while 2,757 were two-wheelers.
The BH series was introduced by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in 2021 to simplify vehicle ownership for people who frequently relocate across states, particularly employees of central government departments, public sector undertakings and private sector organisations with offices in multiple states.
Under normal registration rules, a vehicle used in another state for over 12 months requires re-registration in that state. However, vehicles with BH series plates can be used across India without the need for fresh registration when the owner shifts residence or employment.
Pune has a large presence of central government offices, semi-government establishments and multinational companies, making the city one of the key markets for BH series registrations.
Officials said the ease of transfer, simplified process and unrestricted nationwide usage have made the scheme increasingly popular among professionals with transferable jobs.
BH series number plates are structured using the year of registration, followed by “BH”, a numeric code and a final alphabet suffix. For example, registrations begin with the last two digits of the year in which the number was issued.
