Hinjawadi Power Supply Alert: Fault in 220 kV Cable Puts Pune IT Hub at Risk Till April End
Pimpri Chinchwad, 18th April 2026: A fault in a high-voltage underground power cable in Hinjawadi has raised concerns over a possible electricity disruption in parts of the city’s key IT corridor, with repair work likely to continue till the end of April.
The Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company Limited (MSETCL), MahaTransco, has approached the Pimpri Chinchwad Police Commissionerate’s traffic department seeking urgent clearance to undertake road excavation for repairs. The request was made after a technical failure was detected in a 220 kV extra high voltage cable connecting Hinjawadi Phase 2 and Phase 3.
In a communication to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Vivek Patil, MSETCL Executive Engineer Deepak Devidas Madane stated that the damage occurred during ongoing metro construction work carried out by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) and Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited (PITCMRL).
Officials indicated that nearly 50 MW of electricity supply to Hinjawadi Phase 3 could be affected if the issue is not addressed promptly. The impacted network caters to several major consumers, including data centres such as Nxtra Data-1 and Nxtra Data-2, along with multiple IT firms operating in the area.
The fault has been traced to a location near a metro station, close to the Doehler facility in Hinjawadi. Authorities have emphasised the urgency of repairs to prevent any interruption in power supply to the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park, a critical hub for technology companies.
However, the repair process is expected to be complex due to the presence of existing underground utilities at the site. These include pipelines of the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation, drainage infrastructure, and power lines belonging to the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited.
MSETCL has initiated restoration work on priority, with completion targeted by April 30. As the work involves road digging in a high-traffic zone, authorities have sought support from traffic police to regulate vehicular movement and minimise congestion in Hinjawadi.
Officials said coordinated efforts between agencies will be crucial to ensure timely repairs, reduce inconvenience to commuters, and avoid any potential power disruption in the region’s key IT belt.
