Viman Nagar, 8th February 2025: Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol announced that the survey report for the expansion of the Lohgaon airport runway is expected soon. Speaking at the launch of DigiYatra services at the airport’s new terminal on Saturday, he stated that the report would outline the land requirements—covering government, defence, and private land—for the proposed expansion.

Mohol, who is also the Member of Parliament from Pune, emphasized the importance of expanding the runway to accommodate more international flights. “The survey is in its final stages, and once the report is received, a meeting will be held to discuss its findings and recommendations. The expansion will not only improve flight operations but also enhance overall passenger experience with additional facilities such as parking and new aircraft bays,” he said.

Highlighting the benefits of DigiYatra, Mohol stated that the digital facial recognition-based service would significantly reduce passenger check-in time at the airport. Previously available only at the old terminal, DigiYatra has now been implemented at all entry gates of the new terminal.

“DigiYatra has already benefited over four crore passengers across the country. Currently, 24 major airports are equipped with this facility, and efforts are ongoing to further streamline airport processes to minimize wait times for travelers,” Mohol said.

Following the launch, passengers at Pune airport started using the DigiYatra entry points, with airport staff deployed at gates to assist first-time users.

Exploring Metro Connectivity to Lohgaon Airport

Mohol also stressed the need to enhance public transport connectivity to Lohgaon airport, urging Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Maha Metro authorities to explore the feasibility of connecting the Pune Metro to the airport.

“Currently, passengers have to get off at Ramwadi or Yerawada stations and take other transport to reach the airport. A direct metro link would be a game-changer for travelers, significantly improving accessibility,” he noted.
