DMK president M Karunanidhi passes away

Chennai – DMK president M Karunanidhi, who had been undergoing treatment Kauvery hospital, passed away at 6.10 pm on Tuesday. Thousands of his supporters have gathered outside the hospital.

In a press release, the hospital authorities stated, “With deep anguish, we announce the demise of our beloved Kalaignar Dr M Karunanidhi on 07.08.2018 at 06 10 PM. Despite the best possible efforts by our team of doctors and nurses to resuscitate him, he failed to respond. We profoundly mourn the loss of one of the tallest leaders of India and we share the grief of family members and fellow Tamilians worldwide.”

Karunanidhi was admitted to the hosptial on July 28 following a dip in his blood pressure. He was in the ICU ever since.

Muthuvel Karunanidhi (3 June 1924 – 7 August 2018), popularly known as Kalaignar (‘artist’), was an Indian politician who served as the chief minister of the state of Tamil Nadu for five separate terms in the 1969–2011 period. He is a long-standing leader of the Dravidian Self-respect movement and ten-time president of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam political party. Before entering politics Karunanidhi worked in the Tamil film industry as a screenwriter. He has also made contributions to Tamil literature, having written stories, plays, novels, and a multiple-volume memoir.
