E-Bike Taxi Service in Pune Delayed as RTO Rejects Incomplete Proposals
Pune, 25th September 2025: Pune residents will have to wait a little longer for e-bike taxi services, as the Regional Transport Office (RTO) has rejected proposals from two companies aiming to start operations in the city. The state government had approved e-bike taxi services on a pilot basis for four months in major cities, with Mumbai already granting temporary licenses to operators.
The Maharashtra Bike Taxi Scheme 2021 aims to promote e-bike taxis as an economical and licensed mode of urban transport, with a minimum fare fixed at Rs 15. While Mumbai has begun operations, Pune’s entry into the service has been delayed due to errors in the documents submitted by the applicant companies.
“Two companies had applied to start the e-bike taxi service in Pune. However, their proposals were rejected as they were incomplete. Once the companies complete the necessary documents and submit a fresh proposal, it will be approved,” said Swapnil Bhosale, Deputy Regional Transport Officer, Pune.
Under the scheme, drivers must be at least 21 years old, possess a valid driving license, and operate vehicles that are registered and insured. Only after meeting these conditions can proposals be approved for service.
Meanwhile, rickshaw associations in Pune have voiced their opposition, claiming that the e-bike taxi service could affect their livelihoods.
Passengers, however, are hopeful about the new service. “The e-bike taxi service will be a relief for employees. It will save time, reduce costs, and allow quicker access to metro or bus stations,” said Anil Mishra, a commuter.
For now, Pune residents will need to wait until the proposals are corrected and approved before e-bike taxis hit the city streets.
