Eight New EV Charging Stations Planned on Pune-Mumbai Expressway by Year-End
Lonavala, 26th August 2025: The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has announced plans to expand electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure on the Pune-Mumbai expressway by setting up eight new charging stations along the 94.5 km stretch.
Currently, the expressway has five functional charging points. “We are in the process of identifying suitable spots for installing eight more stations. A detailed study is underway, and once the sites are finalized, the work will begin. Our goal is to complete the installations before the year ends,” a senior MSRDC official told Punekar News.
The official added that a separate survey is being conducted to assess the number of EVs using the expressway daily. “With the increase in charging points, EV users will be able to travel without range anxiety,” the official said.
On an average, about 1.4 lakh vehicles use the expressway every day. While the state government recently waived toll charges for EVs on the Pune-Mumbai expressway, Samruddhi Mahamarg and Atal Setu, many commuters believe that the charging network still lags behind demand.
According to government data, Maharashtra has 5.58 lakh registered EVs. Of these, 1.55 lakh were registered in 2024. However, registrations this year (till August 23) have dipped sharply, with only 24,619 new vehicles added.
In Pune, the Regional Transport Office (RTO) has recorded 96,018 EVs so far. Last year alone, 22,946 were registered, while this year, just 3,137 vehicles have been added till August 23.
The Pimpri Chinchwad RTO, which has a total of 52,541 EVs on record, also shows a similar slowdown. Registrations dropped from 10,899 in 2024 to only 1,397 in the current year till August 23.
Industry experts say the dip in registrations reflects both consumer hesitation and infrastructure limitations, even as the government pushes for higher EV adoption.
