Pune, 13th April 2023: Pune residents experienced electricity outages today evening as strong storm and heavy rain hit the city. Engineers and staff of MSEDCL worked tirelessly to restore power supply in several affected areas, including Rambagh Colony, Vedvihar, Gokhalenagar, Pashan, Dhanori, Charholi, Santnagar, Bhawani Peth, Malwadi, and Mhalunge.
In some areas, trees and branches fell on the power grid, causing interruptions in power supply. In others, the accumulation of water led to humidity, which disrupted electricity supply of underground channels.
One of the worst-hit areas was Rambagh Colony in Kothrud, where a fallen tree cut power supply to 4000 customers on 20 distribution boards. MSEDCL worked quickly to cut and remove the tree, and power supply was expected to be restored in a phased manner until 10.30 pm.
Similar disruptions occurred in other parts of the city, including Ved Vihar, Bhawani Peth, Janata Vasahat, Janwadi, and Pashan areas. Some parts of the city, including Sus Road and the Savitribai Phule Pune University area, had power supply restored immediately.
In Pimpri and Bhosari area, power supply was interrupted in D3 Block, Charholi, Mhalunge, and Malwadi due to the heavy rain. Repair work is ongoing, and some places can expect power supply to resume between 9 and 10.30 pm tonight.
Residents of Mayur Kilbil Society in Dhanori area were also affected by the power outages. Electricity supply to two distribution rohitras was stopped due to a fault in the power line. Although power supply was restored through the second power line, a fault was found, causing the power supply to the society to be interrupted again. Repair work began at 7 am today, but it took until evening for JCB to excavate and repair the channels. Heavy rain hampered repair work, but one of the two power lines has now been repaired, and electricity supply was restored at around 8:30 pm.
The recent storm and heavy rain have highlighted the need for the city’s power infrastructure to be strengthened to avoid disruptions in power supply during extreme weather conditions.
