Elusive Monsoon Teases Pune as Bay of Bengal Low Pressure Stirs Hope
Pune, 15th September 2023: Despite the state experiencing an active monsoon due to a low-pressure area forming in the Bay of Bengal, Pune city and district continue to yearn for the much-awaited rain. Since Sunday (10th September), the skies over the entire district have remained clear, leaving both the residents of Pune and the agricultural community eagerly anticipating the arrival of heavy showers.
Today, partly cloudy skies prevailed over the city and the surrounding district throughout the day. However, no measurable rainfall was reported in any area. Punekars have endured scorching afternoon heat, followed by cool winds in the evenings. The immediate forecast indicates that the skies will remain generally cloudy for the next two days, with intermittent rain and thundershowers expected in certain locations.
During this period, the Meteorological Department has predicted occasional heavy rains in the Ghats region. As the low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal advances towards central India, the entire state, including Pune, is poised to experience favorable weather conditions conducive to increased precipitation. The monsoon-oriented low-pressure belt extends from Bikaner, Kota, and Raisen to the central region of the low-pressure area, encompassing Sambalpur, Digha, and the Northeast Bay of Bengal.
Another active low-pressure belt stretches from southwest Rajasthan to northern Odisha, linking the East-Madhya Pradesh low-pressure area to Madhya Maharashtra and South Konkan. Furthermore, cyclonic winds are currently sweeping through the North Andaman Sea at an elevation of 5.8 kilometers above sea level. These meteorological developments hold the promise of delivering the much-needed rain to Pune city and its parched hinterland in the days to come.
