Fadnavis Proposes Grand Memorial for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Agra
Pune/Agra, 21st February 2025: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has proposed the construction of a grand memorial in Agra to honor Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, commemorating the site where the Maratha warrior king was once imprisoned by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb.
Speaking at an event marking Shivaji Maharaj’s 395th birth anniversary at Agra Fort on Wednesday, Fadnavis highlighted the historical significance of the location and expressed his intent to discuss the project with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
“Agra Fort is not just a monument; it is a testament to Shivaji Maharaj’s resilience and strategic brilliance. His daring escape from this very place symbolizes his unwavering spirit and commitment to Swarajya. We want to establish a memorial that will not only pay tribute to his legacy but also become a major tourist attraction, perhaps even surpassing the Taj Mahal in its historical significance,” Fadnavis stated.
In 1666, Shivaji Maharaj, along with his son Sambhaji, was held captive in Agra Fort after a tense encounter with Aurangzeb. Surrounded by Mughal guards and under strict surveillance, escape seemed impossible. However, Shivaji devised a clever plan—he pretended to be unwell and began sending large baskets filled with sweets to be distributed as religious offerings. Hidden inside one of these baskets, he and his son successfully evaded the Mughal forces and made their escape.
The event also saw the presence of Bollywood actor Vicky Kaushal, who recently portrayed Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj in the film Chhaava. Kaushal acknowledged the Maratha king’s remarkable legacy, stating, “Shivaji Maharaj’s story is one of courage, intelligence, and determination. His life continues to inspire generations, and a memorial in Agra would be a fitting tribute to his extraordinary journey.”
Fadnavis reiterated that the Maharashtra government would take the initiative in pushing for the memorial’s development, ensuring that the site receives the recognition it deserves.
