Pune, 2nd December 2024: A fake doctor who had been treating patients without a medical degree has been sentenced to two years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 2,000 by the Khadki Cantonment Court.
Judicial Magistrate (First Class) L V Shrikhande pronounced the sentence, adding that failure to pay the fine would result in an additional 15 days of imprisonment.
The convicted individual, Milankumar Amar Thakur (34), a resident of Dhanori originally from West Bengal, was found guilty of practicing medicine without the required qualifications. His activities came to light after the Pune Municipal Corporation’s health department received information about his illegal practice. Dr. Rekha Umesh Galande, a medical officer with the corporation, lodged a complaint with the Vishrantwadi police station, leading to Thakur’s arrest.
During the investigation, the police found a stock of medicines at Thakur’s makeshift clinic. Assistant Police Inspector Suryakant Marude of Vishrantwadi Police Station led the inquiry and filed a charge sheet against Thakur. The prosecution, represented by Assistant Public Prosecutor Sayali Thokal, presented sufficient evidence and testimony, which convinced the court of Thakur’s guilt.
