Fish Demand Surges In Pune Ahead Of New Year Celebrations
Pune, 30th December 2024: After a temporary decline during the Margashirsha month of the Marathi calendar due to Thursday fasts, the demand for fish in Pune has surged as people gear up for New Year celebrations. Traders at the Ganesh Peth fish market are witnessing a steady inflow of fish from the country’s east and west coasts to meet the rising demand.
On Sunday (29th December), the market received a substantial supply, including 18 to 20 tonnes of deep-sea fish, 200 to 300 kilograms of bay fish, and 700 to 800 kilograms of river fish. Additionally, 20 to 25 tonnes of Rkhu, Catla, and other varieties arrived from Andhra Pradesh.
Despite the increased supply, fish prices remain high compared to last week, driven by strong consumer demand. In contrast, prices of chicken, mutton, and eggs have remained stable in the city.
The high demand is expected to continue as New Year’s Eve approaches, with fish being a popular choice for festive meals.
