Pune, 22nd April 2024: Reports of stale and possibly contaminated food served at a canteen within Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) have ignited uproar among students. On Monday, allegations surfaced that chapatis were prepared using spoiled flour, and dishes like vegetables and dal had an unpleasant taste, leading to a tense standoff between students and canteen management.

Rahul Sasane, representing the University Student Struggle Action Committee, expressed serious concerns, drawing attention to recent food poisoning incidents at Mumbai University. He emphasized that any compromise on food quality risking students’ health would hold the university accountable. Despite prior complaints, students claimed no improvements had been made.

Student Mayur Javale reported noticing a sour taste in the chapatis during lunch, prompting inquiries that revealed the use of spoiled flour. This has fueled sentiments that the university is neglecting student welfare.

In response, canteen owner Rahul Digardive denied the accusations, citing the procurement of premium-quality ingredients. However, he pledged an internal investigation into the matter.

This isn’t the first time SPPU has faced food-related challenges. Previous incidents involving unhygienic conditions, contaminated food, and foreign objects like hair and insects in meals prompted student protests. Last year, the university established a ‘Restaurant and Canteen Vigilance Committee’ to address such concerns.
