Pune, 26th May 2023: Pune police have apprehended a laborer who orchestrated a fake robbery, deceiving the construction business owner and absconding with Rs 22.65 lakh in cash. The accused has been identified as Basappa Valmik Shingre.

Businessman Nand Kumar Shah filed a complaint at Vishrambaug police station after discovering the theft. Shah, a construction professional, had entrusted the cash to Shingre on May 23 with the instruction to deposit it in the office. However, instead of fulfilling his duty, Shingre fabricated a story of being robbed by four thieves near Nilayam bridge.

Upon registering the case, Shah promptly reported the incident to the Duttawadi police station, accompanied by workers from BSP. Senior Police Inspector Jairam Paigude and Police Inspector (Crime) Vijay Khomane led the investigation, forming five teams to examine footage from around 100 CCTV cameras in the Vishrambaug area, spanning from Law College Road to Paper Galli, Nilayam bridge, Swargate, Kothrud, and Bhugaon.

During interrogations by the investigation teams, inconsistencies in Shingre’s statements and answers emerged, leading to further suspicion. Subsequently, through a thorough investigation conducted by the police, Shingre confessed to fabricating the robbery and admitted that he had kept the money for himself.
